Gregg withdraws as US commerce nominee2009-Feb-12
Saying, "I made a mistake," US Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire abruptly withdrew as commerce secretary nominee on Thursday and drew a testy reaction from the White House, suddenly coping with the third Cabinet withdrawal of Barack Obama's young presidency.

Gregg cited "irresolvable conflicts" with Obama's handling of the economic stimulus and 2010 census in a statement released without warning by his Senate office.Later, at a news conference in the Capitol, he sounded more contrite.

"The president asked me to do it," he said of the job offer. "I said, 'Yes.' That was my mistake."

Obama offered a somewhat different account from Gregg.

"It comes as something of a surprise, because the truth, you know, Mr. Gregg approached us with interest and seemed enthusiastic," Obama said in an interview with the Springfield (Ill.) Journal-Register. "But ultimately, I think, we're going to just keep on making efforts to build the kind of bipartisan consensus around important issues that I think the American people are looking for."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said once it became clear Gregg was not going to support some of Obama's top economic priorities, it became necessary for Gregg and the administration "to part ways," Gibbs said. "We regret that he has had a change of heart."Gregg said he'd always been a strong fiscal conservative. "It really wasn't a good pick." When the Senate voted on the president's massive stimulus plan earlier this week, Gregg did not vote. The bill passed with all Democratic votes and just three Republican votes.

The unexpected withdrawal marked the latest setback for Obama in his attempt to build a Cabinet. It came as the new US president expended political capital in Washington, and around the country, for his economic package.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was confirmed despite revelations that he had not paid some of his taxes on time, and former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle withdrew as nominee as health and human services secretary in a tax controversy.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico was Obama's first choice as Commerce Secretary. He withdrew several weeks ago following disclosure that a grand jury is investigating allegations of wrongdoing in the awarding of contracts in his state. Richardson has not been implicated personally.

Gregg was one of three Republicans Obama had put in his Cabinet to emphasize his campaign pledge that he would be an agent of bipartisan change.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said Obama and Gregg met in the Oval Office on Wednesday and there were no hard feelings.

"It's better we figured this out now than later," Emanuel said. "It's unfortunate. ... There's a disappointment."

Gregg said, "For 30 years, I've been my own person in charge of my own views, and I guess I hadn't really focused on the job of working for somebody else and carrying their views, and so this is basically where it came out."

Gregg, 61, said he informed the White House "fairly early in the week" about his decision. He said he changed his mind after realizing he wasn't ready to "trim my sails" to be a part of Obama's team.

"I just sensed that I was not going to be good at being anything other than myself," he said.

The New Hampshire senator also said he would probably not run for a new term in 2010.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, said he wished Gregg "had thought through the implications of his nomination more thoroughly before accepting this post."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called Gregg a friend and said, "I respect his decision."

In his statement, Gregg said his withdrawal had nothing to do with the vetting into his past that Cabinet officials routinely undergo.

Gregg's reference to the stimulus underscored the partisan divide over the centerpiece of Obama's economic recovery plan. Conservatives in both houses have been relentless critics of the plan, arguing it is filled with wasteful spending and won't create enough jobs. Gregg has refrained from voting on the bill -- and on all other matters -- while his nomination was pending.

The US Commerce Department has jurisdiction over the Census Bureau, and the administration recently took steps to assert greater control. Republicans have harshly criticized the decision, saying it was an attempt to politicize the once-in-a-decade event.

The outcome of the census has deep political implications, since congressional districts are drawn based on population. Many federal funds are distributed on the basis of population, as well.

Both of those factors mean there is a premium on counting as many residents as possible. Historically, the groups believed to be most undercounted are inner-city minorities, who tend to vote Democratic.

Gregg's announcement also undid a carefully constructed chain of events.

The New Hampshire senator had agreed to join the Cabinet only if his departure from the Senate did not allow Democrats to take control of his seat.

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, in turn, pledged to appointed Bonnie Newman, a former interim president of the University of New Hampshire.

She, in turn, had agreed not to run for a full term in 2010, creating an open seat for Democrats to try and claim.

In a statement, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Gregg "made a principled decision to return and we're glad to have him."

Lynch, who spoke to Gregg several hours before the announcement, said he respected Gregg's decision to withdraw and remain in the Senate. He thanked Newman for her willingness to serve.

SEO Techniques: Article submission2009-Feb-12

Among all the seo services  techniques, article submission can be one of the most successful. Article submission generally refers to the writing of articles that are relevant to your online business and then getting them added to the popular article submission directories.

The main purpose behind article submission is to attract a large number of visitors (and links) to your website without incurring a great cost. Obviously, it is important to make sure that the articles you intend to submit are directly related or relevant to your business.

There are various benefits of article submission including advertising, marketing and publicity of your business on the World Wide Web. Two of the main benefits are:

  1. Article submissions can enhance and improve the ranking of your online business in search engines by increasing the quantity of backlinks and PR.
  2. Another benefit that article submission offers is that of establishing the particular website owner as an search engine optimization expert in their industry. By providing valuable detail and information within articles, it builds the trust of potential customers thereby giving them a reason to visit your website.

5 key points to consider while writing articles

During the process of article submission do not forget to consider below 5 key points. Following these points will meet the purpose of both i.e. your target audience and search engines.

  • Articles should be original and information rich.
  • Articles should be keyword rich but not excessive to the point of keyword stuffing.
  • The average length of articles should be between 500 and 700.
  • Give a unique title to your article with main keyword into it so as to make it easy for web crawlers to identify and classify the topic of your article.
  • Giving subheadings, bullets and numberings to articles make it presentable and easy to read for potential customers.

Australian man caught with pigeons in trousers2009-Feb-2
An Australian man was caught with two live pigeons stuffed in his trousers as he got off a flight from the Middle East, authorities said Tuesday.

Customs officers body-searched the 23-year-old after he was allegedly found with two bird eggs in a vitamin container in his pocket during baggage checks at Melbourne Airport on Sunday.

"The man was taken to a private interview room and Customs and border protection officers found he was wearing tights with a live pigeon concealed in each leg," Customs said.

The man, who had come off a ten-hour flight from Dubai, was also allegedly carrying plant seeds in a money belt and eggplant samples in his bag.

"Wildlife smuggling is not only cruel to the animals involved, it poses a severe risk to the Australian environment and the health of the Australian community," said Customs wildlife spokesman Richard Janeczko.

The offences carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and a 110,000 dollar fine ($70,000).

The value of free2009-Feb-2

When you are in business, you are forced to give away free stuff all the time. Especially in the SEO consulting industry, where I am selling time - every time I answer an email or pick up the phone, that's my core product being given away for free.

As you get a bit older and wiser, you learn the value of something that is free.

Free seo services  reports I used to offer free SEO reports from this site. In most cases I could have said "put your keywords in your title" and left it at that, but I generally spent about an hour on the free reports making sure the information was accurate, and useful.

Most people never implemented anything from the report, and many didn't even have the basic courtesy to respond with a simple 'thank you'. Some even came back complaining about how rankings hadn't improved, despite them largely ignoring the recommendations that were made.

I eventually realised the value of these reports was zero. It doesn't matter how good the content was, it just wasn't being taken seriously because it was free.

Free site updates

I also used to work on people's websites without specifically getting in touch with them. Trying to be a pro-active webmaster and fixing spelling mistakes, bugs, usability issues and optimizing content for search engines. I wouldn't usually charge for this.

Every so often, the client would get grumpy about a change that was made - it never mattered that the change was an improvement (security, usability, Search engine optimization, whatever), what mattered was that a change had been made without approval, and therefore should not have been done. The fact that you were helping them and not charging them means nothing in this case. In fact, the value of your time is less than zero in this case.

Some valuable lessons here. I wanted to talk about how to handle free stuff, and how to make your free stuff valuable.

Two Vital Tools For SEO2009-Jan-14

The Internet has revolutionized business and you need a presence to make money in the digital age. While everyone has their favorite tools, I prefer two in particular.
Two Vital Tools For Search engine optimization- Well, For Me
Most businesses build sites without really having a clue regarding how to go about it. The first step in developing a business site is not building it. Instead, you have to focus on the internet marketing aspect of the business and design accordingly. To this end, there are two tools that can be considered from my point of view.
The single best tool you need to become familiar with is Wordtracker. This tool is the proverbial golden egg of Internet marketing. Wordtracker lets you take a keyword and find out all the phrases people are using that incorporate the keyword. You can then take the list of keywords and find out how many searches are occurring on any of the big search engines - Yahoo, Google and MSN. On top of this, you can also determine how difficult it will be to get top rankings for the keyword phrases through search engine optimization.
Wordtracker is great because it allows you to determine if there is a market for your idea before you waste time and money on it. It can also be used to come up with ideas for sites. You simply type in a keyword like "travel" and see if there is a niche with a lot of traffic and a nominal amount of competition for rankings. If you find the niche, you tailor a business idea to it and make a boatload of money.
As if Wordtracker isn't enough, there is a second tool I have come to love. Introducing the article directory. The key to being really profitable on the Internet is getting free traffic. You do this through search engine optimization or by getting publicity. With either area, this has traditionally been accomplished through link trading. Essentially, you agree to put another persons link on your site in exchange for them doing the same with yours. As you might imagine, it takes a long time to build up enough links to get high rankings and publicity. Article directories solve this problem, which makes them great internet marketing tools.
An article directory is exactly what it sounds like. You write an article and deposit it in the directory. Webmaster and editors from all over the world search the directories looking for content for their sites. When they republish your article, you get free publicity. Even better, you will create links in the author area of your article and they will publish those on their site as well. You are either reading this article in a directory or it came from one. Or someone ripped me off.lol.
Everyone has there favorite tools they use to have a go at marketing and seo services. I prefer these, but others would argue for others. In response, all I can say is this work for me and I am far too lazy to go find something new.

Picking an SEO Friendly Web Designer2009-Jan-4

As an SEO we get two kinds of sites; those that were designed in the past and where the designer is no longer involved, and the sites where the design is either ongoing or we are working with the web designers from the start. Both of these have their pros and cons as an SEO but there is a clear advantage of one over the other for the client.

First, let's discuss the pros and cons to the Search engine optimization. If we are coming in after the design is completed there are more than likely (and by that I mean 99.9% likely) some structural and or major design issues that will need to be addressed. Unless the web designer is skilled in SE-friendly design we are going to have our work cut out for us just dealing with structural issues. On the positive side of this scenario, we're left to just work on the site with no designer taking it personally when we tell them we need to make changes (and that can lead to some issues).

Now let's look at the other scenario. Working with a designer has it's cons which is generally - we're going to have a designer taking it personally when we need changes made to the structure of a site or challenging us when we're arguing that while an all-Flash site is visually appealing, it leaves something to be desired from and SEO standpoint.

This conversation generally goes something like this (and all you SEO's out there can sing along):

  • SEO: Flash cannot be properly read in the same way as HTML and we need to have easily spidered content for the search engines to see.
  • Designer: Flash can be read by Google.
  • SEO: But not in the same way. We need multiple pages of optimized content and Flash just isn't going to provide that.
  • Designer: Well I disagree (probably read in some forum somewhere that a miscellaneous guy had no problem ranking for "bob wyverniuschuck artist" with a Flash site) but even if that's true, it's the conversion that counts and this Flash site is going to convert.
  • SEO: Yes we understand that conversions are important but so is traffic. If we can't get traffic to the site then a 100% conversion ratio is irrelevant.
  • Designer: There are other ways to get traffic.
  • SEO: Yes I understand that but this is what the client has hired us to do and has asked that we work together to build an attractive site that ranks well.
  • Designer: I'm going to have to talk to them about this...
  • SEO:

So this is the down side and an extreme example of it (for humor as much as illustration). But there's a big upside and that comes when you have the opportunity to work with web designers who know how important SEO is (as an SEO who knows how important a good design is). Working to balance the two can be a daunting task and having the skills of the SEO services matched with the skills of the web designer can be a true blessing. For example, I may have a great idea to make a site more easily navigated by search engines but an ugly solution to implement it whereas the designer may have a more attractive solution in mind if they know the problem and the technical solution.

Managing Your Google AdWords Campaigns On Your Own2008-Dec-21

Managing your Google AdWords campaign well is very critical to your online business success especially if plan to get lots of business from Google users.

Google AdWords Explained

Although it is highly unlikely, in case you don’t know what are Google AdWords, these are those link boxes that appear at the top or on the right hand side when you search for certain terms and phrases on Google. They are pay-per-click ad campaigns that means the advertisers pay Google for every click Google sends their way. This form of online advertisement is so popular that for Google AdWords is the main source of income.

How Google AdWords Works

The algorithm handling Google AdWords ads might be complex, but the logic is simple. There are two things that affect your AdWords ad placement when you run an ad campaign:

  • Maximum cost per click you are ready to pay
  • The performance of your advertisement

It’s the second point that makes Google AdWords so popular among the advertisers. It doesn’t matter how much money you can pump in; unless your advertisement generates enough clicks, unless it performs, that is, it’s not going to get the placement ranking you desire. So even a company like Nike may appear below you if your ad performs well. This creates a level playing field for everybody and it also makes good business sense for Google. More low-cost clicks are always better than few high-cost clicks.

So the trick is, achieve the highest possible position for the lowest possible cost. And this is something that I want you to achieve after reading this article.

If you follow a few things mentioned in this article I can safely say there is no need to hire a profession AdWords management company, although you can, and should hire them in case you don’t have enough time at your hand.

Target High-Precision Keywords

You can lose lots of money by not targeting the right keywords. Once your ad starts appearing for your selected keywords, you’ll start getting clicks, and you’ll start paying for those clicks. What if 80% of those clicks were never meant for you and they merely happened because your ad appeared for wrong, or misleading, or confusing keywords?

Let’s take “web designing” for instance. A very costly phrases in terms of PPC advertising. But if you are providing web design services and you want only those people to click your ad who are looking for a web designer or a web design company, do you really think “web designing” is a good keyword for you? I’ve personally experienced that people who are searching for online tutorials and trips and tricks mostly search for “web designing”. A good term for you would be “web designer” or “web design company”.

Better, if you want to target an audience only in London, it’ll be more profitable if you target something like “web designer in london” or “web design company london” or “london web designers” or something like that.

I understand that when you are just starting your Google AdWords campaign you are pretty much excited about getting traffic for all sorts of keywords, but keep in mind that you are paying for every click.

Use less competitive, Long Tail keywords that will get you focused traffic. If you are selling Nokia phones you should use “Nokia 6110 Navigator” to drive clicks to that model’s page instead of using simply Nokia to drive traffic to your home page.
